United in building a day around community service on April 28th, Boys Hope Girls Hope hosted volunteers from all over Cleveland as part of the inaugural Jesuit Day of Service. After a light breakfast and a morning prayer led by residential counselor, Hannah Leitch, over thirty volunteers, representing Gesu Parish, John Carroll, Walsh Jesuit and our very own Associate Board, spread out all across the Boys Hope Girls Hope campus, gathering landscaping tools and equipment. Working side by side with our scholars, volunteers mulched over 40 yards across campus, transplanted flowers, pulled weeds, and even prepped the vegetable garden beds for spring planting.
The purpose of the Jesuit Day of Service was to foster new relationships with volunteers and create an opportunity for them to learn more about Boys Hope Girls Hope. As Men and Women for others, volunteers worked hard in rainy conditions, bringing everyone closer together. Sharing laughs and a memorable experience, the day came to a close with a BBQ lunch served in the Murphy Home. Satisfied with the work they accomplished in five short hours, the volunteers departed with hugs and appreciative ‘high-fives’ from our scholars and staff. From the impressive look of the yard to a cultivated and prepped vegetable garden, the Boys Hope Girls Hope Jesuit Day of Service was a renowned success. Beyond the solidarity of local Jesuit institutions, Boys Hope Girls Hope of Northeast Ohio was proud to participate in the Boys Hope Girls Hope National Day of Service, joining a community of fifteen other affiliates.
Special thanks to Meg Wilson, Gesu family volunteers, and to Dr. Peggy Finucane and Maryellen Callanan of John Carroll’s Center for Service and Social Action for recruiting volunteers to serve at the Boys Hope Girls Hope site.
Boys Hope Girls Hope also extends a special thanks to Dave Dudash, Phil Fogarty, and Board Member Ed Plaspohl for their enormous energy and leadership during the campus cleanup and to Green Estates Landscaping Co. for bringing their landscaping machinery and manpower to assist with some of the major projects.
